Fluchthilfe : die Internationale Weltkarte (IWK) und die europäische Vermessung der Welt
Bei der Internationalen Weltkarte handelt es sich um eines der in Europa angeregten Großprojekte, die am Ausgang des 19. Jahrhunderts mit großem Elan entstanden und das sich bis in die zweite Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts zog. Ute Schneiders Artikel geht vor allem auf den Einsatz der Weltkarte im Ersten Weltkrieg ein. Im Vordergrund steht dabei die britische Kartenproduktion, die sich zwischen den Anforderungen im Felde und den Möglichkeiten der Heimat bewegte.
Although maps were of great importance during the First and Second World Wars, we do not know very much about their use. Apart from the official maps, the British War Office provided captured soldiers with a special range of maps hidden in playing cards, Monopoly games and other devices free from suspicion. One of these maps was the International Map of the World (IMW), an international project brought into being by European geographers at the end of the 19th Century. It was as much an expression of the globalization process at the end of the century as itFrom the outset the project shifted between national interests and international co-operation and during the two world wars both the Germans and the Allies used the sheets of the map for their own purposes, of course under observance of secrecy.
