• Trade liberalization was pursued in the 1980s through the structural adjustment program in Ghana. However, much is not known about how such a policy has impacted on the performance of the private sector. This thesis investigates how import tariffs as a measure of trade liberalization affect the productivity and profitability of private firms in the manufacturing sector of Ghana using firm-level data covering 1991 to 2001. Productivity is measured as the total factor productivity at the firm-level whilst profitability is measured via three profitability ratios. The findings reveal that lower tariffs are associated with a decline in the productivity of Ghanaian private firms. Also, productivity of exporting firms was largely better relative to non-exporting ones. In terms of profitability, tariff reductions were associated with an improvement in the net profit margin of local firms. Exporting firms were also found to be largely profitable compared to non-exporting and importing firms.
• In den 1980er-Jahren wurde die Handelsliberalisierung in Ghana durch das Strukturanpassungsprogramme vorangetrieben. Jedoch ist fraglich, wie dies die Leistungsfähigkeit des privaten Sektors beeinflusst hat. Diese Arbeit untersucht den Effekt der Handelsliberalisierung auf die Produktivität und Profitabilität von Unternehmen im verarbeitenden Gewerbe in Ghana. Hierbei werden Daten von 1991 bis 2001 verwendet und Importzölle dienen als Indikator für die Liberalisierung des Handels. Produktivität wird durch totale Faktorproduktivität gemessen, während Profitabilität mithilfe dreier Kennzahlen erfasst wird. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass geringere Zölle mit einem Rückgang der Produktivität ghanaischer Firmen korrelieren. Weiterhin waren exportierende Unternehmen deutlich produktiver als Firmen, die nicht exportieren und sehr viel profitabler als nicht-exportierende und importierende Firmen. Zudem geht eine Senkung der Zollabgaben mit verbesserten Nettoprofit-Margen heimischer Firmen einher.
