• Das britische Votum für einen Austritt aus der EU hat innerhalb des Königreichs die Frage nach der Unabhängigkeit Schottlands reaktiviert. Stimmten Mehrheiten in England und Wales für einen Austritt, wurde in Schottland (sowie Nordirland) der Verbleib mehrheitlich unterstützt. Zudem war die Schottland-Frage ein wesentlicher Bestandteil der Referendumsdebatte. In diesem Beitrag untersuchen wir die Interferenzen der beiden identitären Mehrebenenkonflikte aus diskursanalytischer Perspektive. Dabei gehen wir von komplexen Identitätsverhältnissen aus, die es beiden Wahlkampflagern ermöglichten, »Schottland« für unterschiedliche Argumente einzusetzen. Für die Datenerhebung haben wir ein innovatives Verfahren der Sammlung von Online-Kommunikation erprobt. Im Ergebnis ermitteln wir sowohl eine Dichotomisierung als auch eine Überformung der soziohistorisch komplexen Schottland-Frage durch die bipolare Konfliktkonstellation des Referendums.
• The British vote to leave the EU has reactivated the question of Scottish independence. Whereas majorities in England and Wales voted to leave, EU membership was supported in Scotland (and Northern Ireland) by a majority. Moreover, the Scottish question had been an essential element of the referendum debate. In this article, we examine the interferences of both conflicts from a discourse-analytical perspective. We presume the existence of complex identity relations which allowed both sides of the election campaign to use »Scotland« for different argumentative purposes. To collect our data, we tested an innovative method for capturing online communication. As a result, we find that the socio-historically complex Scotland question is both dichotomised and superposed by the bipolar referendum situation.
