Abstract

This thesis investigates two main topics of nanoparticle science: nanoparticle crystallization and nanoparticle-solvent interactions. The first aim was to investigate whether and how organic ligands influence the crystallization of zinc oxide nanoparticles in ethanolic sol-gel processes. Secondly and of great importance for manifold applications, nanoparticles are supposed to induce solvation shells around them, which affect the local solvent density, the pH, the ionic gradients and many other physio-chemical properties of the interface. It was the challenge to experimentally demonstrate for the first time the ubiquitous existence of such nanoscopic solvation shells. For both topics, the pair distribution function (PDF) was the central experimental tool.
