This paper presents a general overview of the field of artificial life. Initially, we outline the fundamental theory that defines a virtual creature, we expand this with advancements present in the field, from the creatures’ morphology to their behavior. Finally, we provide a prospective analysis of their application to improve the quality of life of humans. The term "artificial intelligence" was coined back in 1956 by mathematician John McCarthy and other researchers such as Marvin Minsky. This concept defined the science and engineering of "making intelligent machines." Its sibling term, artificial life, is equally fundamental, and relates to the organisms using this intelligence. Currently, both fields complement each other and describe a new class of artificial organisms called virtual creatures.... view less
