Wenn Fotos nicht lügen können, was können sie dann? Zum Einsatz der Fotoanalyse in der Politikwissenschaft

Abstract

'Fotografien bilden ein weithin unbeachtetes Quellenmaterial in der Politikwissenschaft. Wenn Sie eingesetzt werden, dann rein illustrativ oder als Mittel historischer Beweisführung. Folglich findet eine methodologische Beschäftigung mit dem Medium Fotografie kaum statt, weshalb es vielfach zu Fehlschlüssen und Überinterpretationen kommt, was die Funktion von Fotos in politologischen Kontexten betrifft. Fotoanalyse wird dagegen als Methode dargestellt, die auf Basis von 'visual literacy' arbeitet. Neben der Geschichte der politischen Verwendung des Mediums selbst werden dabei auch erkenntnistheoretische und semiotische Positionen berücksichtigt, die in Nachbardisziplinen wie der Philosophie von Vilem Flusser oder Roland Barthes ausgearbeitet wurden.' 'Among political science, photographs are widely disregarded as source material. They are either used as simple illustration of an issue or as means of historical proof. Hence, the medium of photography is rarely subject to methodological discussion. This often leads to wrong conclusions or over-interpretations regarding the function of photographs within the context of political science. To avoid these errors, photo analysis will be presented as a method which deals with pictures on the basis of 'visual literacy'. Besides the history of the political usage of photography as medium itself, approaches from epistemology and semiotics will be taken into account which have been developed by Vilem Flusser or Roland Barthes in neighbouring disciplines like philosophy.'
