(RW)... view less

The ontogenesis of patterns in moral argumentation as treated by Kohlberg has always been theoretically and empirically related to certain social conditions that stimulate or hinder the progress of moral thinking and action, depending on the special characteristics of those conditions, their synchronic and diachronic constellation, and the individual orientations already formed in each case. Durkheim, Piaget, Kohlberg himself, Hoffmann, Garbarino, and Bronfenbrenner have formulated and, for the most part, also tested specific assumptions about social conditions giving rise to individual moral development. In the article, these concepts are first outlined, discussed, and summarized. With the aid of an interactionist model of socialization processes, an attempt is made to reconstruct systematically the pattern of sociobiographical conditions of moral development and thereby to specify all the conditions for the transitions to conventional and postconventional thinking. Some complex hypotheses resulting from this attempt are taken up in case analyses and tested on a small sample of twenty-one young skilled workers.... view less
