"In today's societies, partnerships and families are more diverse than in the past 100 years. In Germany there are 2.6 divorces per 1000 citizens. In the United States, the rates are even higher: 3.4 divorces per 1000 citizens. Parental separation, including divorce, can thus be defined as a common but critical life event in a child's biography. During adolescence, these events are often re-evaluated in the course of identity development. In this study, 56 American adolescents (average age 15.3; SD=1.0) were interviewed at home. They were asked to describe how they experienced their parents' separation (a) when it happened, and (b) how they evaluate the event today. For this purpose, they were first asked to rate the event on a 7-point-Likert-scale ranging from 'devastating' (1) to 'easing' (7). Afterwards, they were asked standardized open questions targeting the same subject. The open answers were analyzed with the help of qualitative content analysis. This data set is an example for a possible integration of different methods. It shows that re-assigning meaning to quantitative results can be facilitated empirically so that biases are avoided and room is made for the unthought of." (author's abstract)... view less
