Abstract

"The 'Chandlerian' paradigm of industrial governance characterized by the dominance of vertically integrated and diversified giant firms and the core position of final assemblers in the value chains competes with a new paradigm which Michael Borrus and John Zysman have called 'Wintelism'. Wintelism is characterized by the vertical disintegration of core firms, the increasing fragmentation of value chains and shifting power relations between the industries' groups of actors. This process is primarily driven by the growing influence of the capital market on corporate governance structures and shorter product life cycles. The automobile and the information and communication industries are the leading sectors of the New and Old Economy. The article focuses on the restructuring of core firms, constellations of actors and industrial relations and by comparing both industries it analyses the developmental tendencies of industry governance."
