- Currently, production systems are faced with increasing uncertainty and instability, so that disturbances or unplanned changes can quickly lead to massive deteriorations of the performance. On the one hand, this is due to increasingly volatile markets which are characterized by rising customer expectations and international competition. On the other hand, the production systems themselves are becoming more complex. Especially shorter planning periods and/or the introduction of more and more connected (IT-)systems are leading to greater complexity. In order to remain productive and competitive under such conditions, it is crucial that a high level of robustness against disruptions and unplanned changes is ensured. Despite various model-based studies of robustness in the (extended) context of manufacturing, up until now there exists no established understanding of what robustness in production represents in general, how it is linked to other capabilities such as flexibility or resilience, or how it can be measured appropriately. Despite various model-based studies of robustness in the (extended) context of manufacturing, up until now there exists no established understanding of what robustness in production represents in general, how it is linked to other capabilities such as flexibility or resilience, or how it can be measured appropriately. This may also be due to the fact that the understanding and approaches from industrial practice have not been considered yet. For this reason, an empirical study was conducted among decision-makers in manufacturing companies. In doing so, the understanding, the relevance, influences and the evaluation of robustness in production systems were captured from the perspectives of industrial practice. Amongst other things, it was shown that many practitioners do not have a clear picture of robustness. Moreover, robustness is often judged as being improvable while only very few companies apply a systematic approach to evaluate this capability at all.…
