Solving stationary diffusion problems with random coefficients by generalized polynomial chaos

  • Random partial differential equations are used to quantify uncertainty in complex systems like for example subsurface flows in porous media. In this thesis the stationary diffusion problem with random coefficient serves as illustrative model problem and is approximately solved by the stochastic Galerkin method based on generalized polynomial chaos. In the current treatment of such problems by stochastic Galerkin methods it is standard to assume that the random diffusion coefficient is bounded by positive deterministic constants or modeled as lognormal random field. In contrast, we make the significantly weaker assumption that the non-negative random coefficients can be bounded strictly away from zero and infinity by random variables only and may have distributions different from a lognormal one. We establish a solution theory for such problems and present a suitable stochastic Galerkin method for the numerical solution by using weighted test function spaces. We establish a solution theory for such problems and present a suitable stochastic Galerkin method for the numerical solution by using weighted test function spaces. Therefore this stochastic Galerkin method is a stochastic Petrov-Galerkin method. We investigate the convergence behaviour of the sequence of these stochastic Petrov-Galerkin solutions to the weak solution in the natural norm and give also a priori error estimates using the properties of generalized polynomial chaos. Additionally, we show that the standard stochastic Galerkin approach does not necessarily produce a sequence of approximate solutions that converges in the natural norm to the weak solution even in the case of a lognormal coefficient.show moreshow less
