Early industrialisation and subsequent construction activity of the evolving industrialists in the cities Reichenbach, Mylau, Netzschkau in the Vogtland district

  • The cities of Reichenbach (Vogtland), Mylau and Netzschkau form an economic district, in which the industrialisation process began in the first decade of the 19th Century. Reichenbach, the largest of the three cities, could count itself already in 1847 to one of the most important factory locations in Saxony. The aim of this dissertation is to analyse the cause of the early industrialisation, as well as to explore the effects of early industrialisation on the emergence of the industrialists, the construction of the factories and as a result, the influence of the industrialists on the urban development of the region and to represent mutual dependencies and relativities. From the analysed economic, social-historic as well as urban and architectural aspects, the following dependencies were clear: the early industrialisation of the economic region of Reichenbach was based on the traditional textile industry that evolved based on some geographical conditions in the Middle Ages. From the analysed economic, social-historic as well as urban and architectural aspects, the following dependencies were clear: the early industrialisation of the economic region of Reichenbach was based on the traditional textile industry that evolved based on some geographical conditions in the Middle Ages. From 1808 or 1811 the cotton manufacturing industry was the first to start the transition from home production to industrial mass production through the introduction of mechanical spinning machines and their focused placement in a factory. A result of this process was the development of the industrialists. In the second decade of the 19th Century the industry specialised in the production of worsted yarn and crisis-proof woollen yarn products, through which the economic region of Reichenbach developed into the industry’s centre in Saxony. This economic success was reflected in extensive building activities by the industrialists that steadily invested into new plant buildings or the expansion of existing buildings. Similarly, the increase in production was connected with an additional demand for labour, so the number of inhabitants increased rapidly in the cities, which resulted in large urban expansion. The connection of Reichenbach to the rail network in 1846 and Netzschkau in 1851 and the expansion of urban infrastructure accelerated this urban development. Therefore, not an isolated event or a single person was the determining factor for the early industrialisation of the cities Reichenbach, Mylau and Netzschkau, the emergence of the industrialists and their construction activities, but the combination of national and regional economic and social processes.show moreshow less
