Contributions to the theory of infinite horizon optimal control problems

  • The present doctoral thesis provides a contribution to the theory of optimal control problems with infinite horizon. This class of problems mainly arises while dealing with macroeconomic models like the Ramsey model and its various generalizations as well as biological models like prey-predator models. One of the key ideas of this work is the choice of a weighted Sobolev- and weighted Lebesgue space for the role of state and control space respectively. This idea is consequently followed through all the chapters and the properties of these weighted functional spaces are used with benefit in order to prove theoretical results. Another crucial idea is the introduction of an additional pure state constraint into the problem statement. Under certain assumptions it yields the existence of an optimal solution which is otherwise not necessarily given. Another crucial idea is the introduction of an additional pure state constraint into the problem statement. Under certain assumptions it yields the existence of an optimal solution which is otherwise not necessarily given. There are three weight functions in the problem setting which are newly to define for each particular model. These are the weight func tion in the objective, the weight function for weighting the processes and the weight function from the state constraint. The interplay of them is to observe while testing the process for the strong local optimality after introducing an additional weight function for weighting the neighborhood of the candidate process. The thesis covers two groups of theoretical investigations. Firstly, there are theorems concerning semicontinuity of integral functionals with Lebesgue interpretation of the integral together with results about continuity of Nemytskij operators defined and acting in weighted Lebesgue spaces over sets of infinite measure. The named results serve as a fundament for formulation of an existence theorem for considered problem whose proof is based on the scheme of generalized Weierstraß theorem. The introduced state constraint plays hereby a crucial role. Secondly, there are results on duality theory for control problems and derivation of sufficient optimality cond itions. Here a dual problem in the sense of Klötzler is constructed which is an infinite dimensional optimization problem. Using the developed duality theory one obtains second order sufficient conditions for strong local optimality. Taking the active state constraints into account, a weakened version of this theorem is provided. All theoretical results are reinforced through application of them onto several numerical examples. Further on, the necessity of strong distinction between different interpretations of the integral in the objective is demonstrated by an example. The choice of different integral notions can lead to different feasible sets of the underlying optimal control problem as well as to completely different optimal values of the objective in dependence on the used integral notion. For this reason in the present work it is consequently distinguished between the integral notions of Lebesgue and Riemann. The applicability of the proved theorems is demonstrated i n detail on a resource allocation model, the linear Ramsey model as well as the model of optimal renewal of a technical resource.show moreshow less
