Limit Theorems for Quantum Entropies

Bjelakovic, Igor

The intention of this thesis is to present some limit theorems for the mean von Neumann entropy and mean relative entropy of ergodic quantum states on quasi-local C*-algebras. The first limit theorem, concerning the mean von Neumann entropy, we were able to prove is the full quantum analogue of the famous Shannon-McMillan theorem. This theorem is one of the essential ingredients in establishing the relative AEP (asymptotic equipartition property) for the mean relative entropy of any ergodic quantum state with respect to any stationary product state. This property, in turn, is used to derive the quantum analogue of Stein's lemma. These limit theorems provide an operational interpretation of the relative entropy as a distinguishability measure on the set of states. This interpretation leads to an new, simple and intuitive proof of the monotonicity of the relative entropy which is based entirely on the information theoretical considerations.
