Über das Er-Finden von Identität : Olga Tokarczuks Roman "Taghaus - Nachthaus"

(Re)Constructing Identity. Olga Tokarczuks Novel 'House of Day, House of Night’

  • Based on a literary text by Olga Tokarczuk the following paper analyses the construction of identity in postmodern settings of transition; literature is discussed here as an artistic expression of a socio-cultural problem. Olga Tokarczuk's novel ‘House of Day, House of Night’ is an example of postmodern identity-construction that is based upon ambivalence. ‘House of Day, House of Night’ tells the story (stories) of inhabitants of a border town, where the sense of cultural belonging and the commonplace that aid the establishment of identity have been repeatedly dissolved due to changes in the milieu. This paper is subdivided into three parts. In the first part, different aspects of identity that become visible during the narrative of the novel, are presented and analysed with terms and methods of the cultural studies. It shows that identity can only be conceived and experienced as a permanent process of construction. The general definition of terms is followed by an analysis of the relation between identity and literature. This paper demonstrates both the active and activating role literature can play with regard to current, ever more complex, discourses on identity. Using text extracts from the novel, the concluding part illustrates this thesis and examines how identity can be created and realised through literary constructions (mushroom-metaphor), which in turn is theoretically supported by Bhabha's idea of the ‘Third Space’.show moreshow less
