  • A previously unreleased portrait of Alexander von Humboldt, drawn by Jacques-Louis David’s disciple Frédéric d’Houdetot, adds a lively, focused and astonishingly present image to the iconography of Humboldt, that of the famous traveler and scholar as a young man, a few years after his return from the Americas. The effigy, traced in 1807 Berlin during the French occupation, is part of an album of portraits by Houdetot conserved in the Conseil d’État in Paris and throws some light upon the relationships that formed in the Prussian capital between members of the occupying forces, Jewish salon circles and the scientific community – a breeding ground for the transnational exchange of representatives of a young and vital generation that saw themselves as true Europeans.
