• Aus der Distanz von beinahe zwei Dekaden werden der Literaturstreit und die daran anschließende Stasi-Debatte in dem selbsterkundenden Buch Stadt der Engel als Gewaltdiskurs wahrgenommen und ambivalent reflektiert. Die erzählerische Reflexion dieses Diskurses ist allerdings in ein Geflecht von Gewaltnarrativen eingebettet, das nur schwer zu entwirrenund zu entschlüsseln ist. Der vielschichtige Text ist jedoch nicht auf die literarische Vergegenwärtigung der strukturellen Gewalt im DDR-Regime oder der symbolischen Gewalt in den medialen Kontroversen zu reduzieren, ebenso wäre die Einschränkung auf die quälende Selbstbefragung der Erzählerin im Zusammenhang mit ihren in Vergessenheit geratenen Stasi-Kontakten und damit der eigenen Verstrickung in die Gewaltstrukturen eine unzulässige Vereinfachung.
• After a quarter of a century, the image of the GDR prevailing in the German-German literary dispute of the early 1990s appears to have come about as the result of a power discourse in a social field, which after 1989/90 was structured differently and in which competing positions sought to assert themselves. In the new power relations following the end of the GDR, media presence represented an important source of the discursive power of field actors. The earlier criticism of social, political and economic power in the GDR was replaced by the "criticism of their critics" in the media polemics of the literary dispute, ahead of all others of Christa Wolf. From a distance of almost two decades, the literary dispute in Christa Wolf's book "City of Angels" is perceived as a discourse of violence and is reflected on ambivalently. The recollection of experienced structural violence occurs in a network of mosaic-like (violence-)narrations of the past century. The article seeks to decode this network and determine the function of narrative self-reflection in the tension between experienced and constructed history. Thus, it explores the central role of the violence narrative in Wolf's work.
