Merkmale und Ökologie von Streblotrichum commutatum (JUR.) HILP. und Streblotrichum convolutum (HEDW.) P. BEAUV. im Aachener Stadtgebiet und Umgebung

Characteristics and ecology of Streblotrichum commutatum (JUR.) HILP. and Streblotrichum convolutum (HEDW.) P. BEAUV. in the urban area of Aachen and surroundings

  • Characteristics and ecology of the closely related Streblotrichum commutatum (= Barbula commutata JUR. = B. sardoa (SCHIMP.) J.-P. FRAHM) and S. convolutum s. str. (= B. convoluta s. str.) are shown. Both Streblotrichum species are frequent in the urban area of Aachen and surroundings and easy to recognize in most cases. Reliable field characteristics are differences in size, habit, leaf shape and color. In culture, i.e. under equal growing conditions, these differences are preserved. Both Streblotrichum species are ecologically euryoecious in the study area. The ecological requirements on site conditions can overlap but are primarily different in most cases. S. commutatum grows mainly on walls and fresh gravel as well as on disturbed loamy ground and behaves as a pioneer species. It prefers lesser exposed sites on rich basic soil, however, these conditions are not necessary. S. convolutum prefers more stable growing conditions typically in dense turfs together with other small mosses on older paths and soil covered tar. Information in the literature on S. commutatum and S. convolutum suggests that the ecological variability of S. commutatum in the study area is larger than in other regions and differences observed in other regions are not or only partially true in the study area.
