Morphogenesis of Nyong and Ntem catchment areas in Southern Cameroon considering the neo-tectonic impact

  • In the present thesis the evolution of the catchment areas of the Nyong and the Ntem was shaped since the opening of the South Atlantic with regard to neo-tectonic processes. The results maintain the identification of suitable sediment traps as proxy data archives for the reconstruction of the palaeoenvironment. With remote sensing and field work geomorphologic forms were investigated with regard to the morphogenesis of the catchment areas. Four geomorphologic formations were defined: (1) Peneplains and inselbergs, (2) ‚demi-oranges’ and ‚bas-fonds’, (3) anastomosing river course, and (4) peneplain step with inselberg range and V-shaped valleys. In relation to these geomorphologic formations the derived data was interpreted morphodynamic-genetically. (1) A horizon of pisolits below hillwash as a result of pedimentation was discussed concerning the geomorphologic form of peneplains and inselbergs. Research on an inselberg complemented the discussion about pedimentation. The formation of two abandoned channels shows a third process which altered the region probably during the LGM. The top of the inselberg represents a former peneplain level. According to the regressive erosion of a scarp along the Ntem faults the inselberg was shaped out of the basement. (2) In the upper catchment areas broad alluvial plains (bas-fonds des regions humides) are framed by poly-convex hills (demi-oranges). It is assumed that this formation was shaped by lateral erosion after an iniating incision. Particularly the upper Nyong catchment was reduced by river captures. Due to the modification since the capturing they can be classified into three classes: The first class is defined by a distinct valley watershed and an elbow of stream capture. The habit of the river capture is already modified in the second class. However, the orientation to the receiving stream is still visible. The third class is defined by a river capture which only becomes visible by the orientation of the river’s source. (3) Situated in front of a peneplain step several locations give information about the evolution of the Ntem interior delta. Extensive banks of gravels and rock fragments were accumulated and cemented by manganese and iron oxyde into a fanglomerate. The drainage network distinctly shapes the geological structures of the region. It is assumed that the interior delta was formed by a step fault along E-W oriented fractures. The sediment traps were filled up by the Ntem River. Late Pleistocene sediments along the major faults give an idea of the age of the forms. A former broadly laid out ferricret was seperated along E-W oriented faults. (4) Below the interior delta the river passes the peneplain step through a V-shaped valley. It aligns itself along a NNE-SSW structure with two linear N-S fractures. This physiognomy is a reminiscent of a graben with two transform faults. The river drains across a waterfall into the valley. At its foot and along the valley broad accumulations of rock fragments and gravels are deposited which are hardened to a fanglomerate. The interpretation of rock cuts reflect processes which have led to the evolution of the V-shaped valley. A connection with the palaeo-climatic data of the region hints at Late Pleistocene times in which the evolution occurred. Additionally a lineament analysis was conducted along the peneplain step. Four cluster regions were identified. They are defined by different lineaments reflecting structural directions primarily allocating to the pan-African orogeny. Clues to Archaic structures like the Ntem faults are not confirmed entirely. In the synthesis it was tried to extrapolate the results of the different sites to the whole region. This thesis gives a broad insight into tropical geomorphology with its different forms interpreted with regard to the evolution of the Ntem and Nyong catchment areas. The combination of remote sensing and field work helps to emphasize the directions of geological structures of N-S, E-W, and NE-SW along which the most remobilisation has taken place. In the Nyong’s floodplain also a NNW-SSW direction is documented which originates in the context of neo-tectonic offsets. Uplifts which have increased since Miocene times due to the collision of Africa with Eurasia are the reason for geomorphological modifications as incision or denudation on the one hand and extensional fractures at the rise of the Congo craton on the other hand. Probably the vicinity of the active Cameroon Volcanic Line and also the compression of the Congo craton by the East African, South Atlantic and Southwest Indic Rift triggered the tectonic events. The repeated renewal of the central African hinterland by uplift led to a re-arrangement of the drainage network. The probably sub-recent river capture of the Nyong catchment area by the Sanaga River emphasizes the continuous evolution by uplift and erosion along the Cameroonian hinterland.
