  • Usability exists when the user can achieve his or her goals effectively, efficiently and satisfactorily on a website. Due to the ever-increasing competition between websites of different companies and industries on the Internet, users have high expectations of the usability of a website. With the help of web usability tests, the usability of a website can be evaluated for the user. In the past, the focus was mainly on classic laboratory web usability tests, but more and more companies are demanding digital and more cost-effective alternatives. The aim of this master's thesis was to develop a (synchronic) remote web usability test procedure based on the current research literature, which hardly differs in its results from classic laboratory web usability test procedures. For this purpose, empirical studies with ten participants each were conducted for both procedures. These corresponded to the potential target group of the website to be tested. The remote tests took place in real user environments of the participants. The Labor tests were conducted in a laboratory environment. Current DIN-EN-ISO usability standards formed the basis for identifying usability problems. With regard to formulated hypotheses, the results of both web usability test procedures were analysed and compared. The hypotheses included the comparison of the preparation and execution times, the test environments, the number of clicks, the degree of fulfilment of the tasks, the number of usability problems identified, the quality of the recordings, the use of the thinking aloud method, the costs and the satisfaction of the participants. The results of both methods showed high correlations with regard to the preparation and execution of the tests, the recording of screen and audiovisual data, the number and severity of identified usability problems as well as the satisfaction of the participants with the test procedures. This master's thesis is interesting for researchers in the usability context as well as for companies that want to optimise their external and product presentation on the web.
