The societal boost of liberalization and individualization in the 1960s weakened the confessional identity distinctly and permanently, at least for the following generations. Catholics of the generation of 1968, who experienced this change in their phase of adolescent, took up the newly gained inner-church and societal opportunities for decisions and autonomy. They transformed their catholic-institutional shaped identity, but also often maintained their religious attachment to the church. Only the children of that generation, born around 1970 and usually socialized in the Catholic milieu, individuated themselves. They gave up their church- oriented religious attachment or became completely religiously indifferent. A religious type developed, which was by structure and awareness analogue to the cultural Protestantism.
