We evaluated allelopathic constraints of natural bark phenols by comparing field data collected from sites with Populus x canadensis in North-Rhine-Westphalia and by biochemical analysis of bark and lichen tissues.
An invers correlation between bark phenol concentration and epiphyte cover was found. Climatic impact and site characteristics were discussed. An in-vitro test revealed growth inhibitory effects of isolated phenols on juvenile lichens (soredia).},
