As part of this dissertation, the influence of morphology and size on the OER activity of Co3O4 nanoparticles was investigated by means of solvothermal synthesis and thermolysis. Through the thermal decomposition of Co(acac)2 with subsequent calcination, nanospheres in a size range from 8 to 15 nm were successfully synthesized either in the rock‑salt structure (CoO) or in the spinel structure (Co3O4). In contrast to the CoO nanospheres, the spherical Co3O4 particles show a trend in terms of particle size in the OER. The overpotential decreases with the particle size. This effect was attributed to the presence of oxygen defects. Co3O4 was synthesized using a solvothermal approach with a variation of solvent and capping agent in the shapes of hexagonal plates, cubes, and nanooctahedrons. Before calcination for the hexagons and octahedra hydroxidic phases were isolated for which the electrocatalytic properties have not been further investigated. For the spinel nanoparticles, the following activity relationship was found regarding the surface termination: (222) (hexagons) > (220) (cubes) ≥ (311) (spheres) >> (111) (octahedrons).

To investigate the possible presence of oxygen defects more closely, temperature and time-dependent calcination studies were carried out on 15 nm CoO nanospheres. A strong influence of the temperature or the calcination time with a decrease in OER activity was found. Oxygen defects were detected via XRD, IR and EELS. In addition, the mechanism of the formation of Co3O4 via core-shell nanoparticles from CoO and Co3O4 was demonstrated by means of TEM analysis. However, further analysis methods would be helpful to identify defects. X-ray spectroscopic methods in particular could be used for this purpose.

Studies of the conversion of cobalt monoxide during electrocatalysis showed a transition to the spinel Co3O4. This was demonstrated by means of XRD, HRTEM, EELS and IR spectroscopy without a full conversion. It is assumed that the spinel species is formed via hydroxidic intermediates. However, the generation of Co3O4 by oxidation during the transport of the sample in air cannot be excluded. In order to avoid such undesired oxidation products, the sample should be stored under inert atmosphere immediately after electrocatalysis.

Influences of the metal substitution on the OER activity in cobaltites were shown by the synthesis of MxCo3-xO4 with the metals nickel and manganese. Successful substitution was demonstrated by means of XRD, EDX and Raman spectroscopy. A positive effect on the OER was shown by the substitution of nickel with a minimal overpotential for the compound NiCo2O4. Since no spinel phases with x > 1 are known for NixCo3-xO4, no compounds of this type were synthesized. However, it might be possible to incorporate small amounts of Ni3+, so that the overpotential for nickel-rich spinels could be further reduced. A substitution with manganese, on the other hand, has no activating effect on the electrocatalytic oxygen oxidation. A comparison of Co3O4 with an exclusively divalent cation such as Mg2+ or Zn2+ could show the influence of Co2+ or Co3+ on the OER. Up to now it was not possible to synthesize spinel compounds of this type by thermolysis without the formation of monoxidic secondary phases. An alternative synthetic approach might be more suitable.

Phase pure spinel compounds of the form CoxFe3-xO4 were synthesized for x ≤ 1.75 by mixing Co(acac)2 and Fe(acac)3 in a thermal decomposition approach in oleylamine. For stoichiometries with a higher cobalt content, a rock‑salt-like secondary phase is formed. A strong influence of cobalt on the overpotential could be demonstrated in electrocatalysis. Even small amounts of cobalt reduce the overpotential significantly to the characteristic value of Co3O4. The OER activity can be increased by the cobalt substitution up to a maximum in the two-phase mixture for x = 2.25. Using HRTEM analysis, the loss of shape with the formation of smaller particles for the CoFe2O4 with degradation of cobalt was shown. The phase of the smaller nanoparticles is so far unknown. In addition, the influence of possible oxygen defects in CoFe2O4 through thermal annealing under inert atmosphere and in air at 200 and 300 ° C was investigated. The presence of defects could be detected by means of IR analysis, although it is not known whether this is caused by the incorporation of organic molecules. In general, the influence of capping agents on electrocatalysis should be investigated more closely. A comparison of nitrogen doped with untreated CoFe2O4 could also be useful for this.
