PVC of different origin and various additives used for PVC processing have been examined by means of infrared spectroscopy and a method suitable for identity control has been developed. As measurement techniques diffuse reflection and Diamond ATR have been employed for the Middle Infrared (MIR); reflection, transmission and transflection have been used for the Near Infrared (NIR) respectively. Results of a cluster analysis based on a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) pointed towards the MIR as most suitable spectral region compared to the NIR for the development of an identity control scheme. The so called Compare Method has been used to develop the identity control scheme, whereby the similarity between a sample and a reference spectrum was determined by calculating the correlation coefficient. Our spectroscopically based identity control scheme can be successfully applied to all products applied in PVC processing, like plasticizers, inorganic additives and bonding agents. As sample preparation the relatively simple Diamond ATR technique has been used. Furthermore, diffuse reflection in the MIR has been applied for the first time for the identity control of PVC powders.
