Biologische Inspiration sensibler Funktionen in nachgiebigen technischen Grenzflächen

The aim of this thesis is to develop a flexible and multi-layered sensor structure for the detection of mechanical parameters, in particular pressures or forces. This layer structure should be able to adapt in terms of its shape and stiffness to exogenous influences, which as mechanical measuring conditions can vary depending on the way the application is used.
As a complex sensory organ, human skin serves as an example of a compliant adaptive technical system. The functionally relevant morphological components of the skin such as stratification, 3-dimensional geometry of the interface of the papillary dermis, and the mechanoreceptors play a major role in perceiving the mechanical stimulus on the body surface, and how it is subsequently interpreted. The spatial distribution of the mechanoreceptor types within the mechanically different tissue layers enables the skin to receive different types of information from its immediate environment.
The papillary dermis is directly adjacent to the epidermis and is attached to it by connective tissue. Compressive force on the skin surface produces a measurable offset of the papillary flank surfaces to one another, and this causes an increase in the expansion properties of the stimulus. One additional hydraulic component is the subepidermal venous plexus. The vascular stiffness of this subepidermal venous plexus depends on the internal pressure. The integration strategy of the sensor-actuator system of the human skin is realized using a technical implementation of this sensor periphery.
The distribution of tension in the tissue layers of the skin, which has resulted from the various external stresses on the skin surface, can be determined by means of analytical and numerical methods. Results from experimental biology as well as skin models corresponding to the natural object, which reflect certain properties (e.g. papilla profiles or material properties and sensor position), were transferred to the biomimetic explanatory model. The sensors within a suitable textile or polymer matrix can be spatially distributed in the compliant multi-layer functional model in such a way that the specific accompanying tangential force components can be recorded and captured at surface pressure.
The structure of the surface of the boundary layer can be produced as a wedge-shaped profile similar to the papillary dermis. By implementing the fluidic actuators in the basal layer, it is possible to make a stiffness adjustment during the measurement. This combination of sensor and actuator components enables the overall system to adapt to exogenous influences and variable measurement conditions in a wide range.
