Computer-generated volume transmission holograms show a great potential to be used as light-shaping elements in automotive headlamps. However, the conditions in headlamp systems are different from those in classical application areas of holography. These conditions cause new requirements for the calculation of holograms. An essential aspect is the reconstruction light source. Instead of monochromatic lasers, the typical light sources in automotive headlamps are white LEDs. Their spectral properties lead to dispersion effects and the divergence of the LED light results in a blurred reconstructed image. In this thesis an optimization methodology is presented, which allows the adaptation of volume transmission holograms to the spectral characteristics and the emission characteristics of LEDs. This method includes a design process for calculating optimized hologram information and a simulation approach for realistic visualization of the reconstructed image. Both, the design and the simulation have to take into account LED parameters like wavelength, divergence angle and wavefront shape. Especially the description and the measurement of LED-specific wavefronts are particular challenges and hence discussed in this thesis. The calculated holograms are exposed in a photopolymer to verify the design process and the simulation. As a part of this research project, the necessary exposure process is implemented in the laboratory and the exposure parameters are considered in the design and in the simulation. A holistic methodology for optimizing and verification of the holograms is realized by the synchronization of parameters from the design to the exposure process and finally to the simulation. Within six experimental test series, non-optimized and optimized holograms are illuminated with different light sources and the reconstructions are analysed. The results prove the successful compensation and visualization of the mentioned effects of LED illumination on the reconstruction. In addition, influences on the reconstruction by the exposure process and by the holographic material are shown. Furthermore, possible solutions for a successful white light reconstruction with transmission holograms are proposed.
