Spin state switching is associated with a transition between two magnetic states. For nickel(II), the change of a square planar to a square pyramidal coordination sphere leads to a transition from a diamagnetic low spin to a paramagnetic high spin state (Coordination-Induced Spin State Switching, CISSS). To enable reversible switching, a nickel porphyrin where the fifth donor is incorporated into a covalently attached photoswitchable azopyridine unit has been developed, of which only one isomer is able to bind to the nickel center (Light-Driven Coordination-Induced Spin State Switching, LD-CISSS). In order to develop a new, non-porphyrin based system capable of performing LD-CISSS, a dipyridylmethane dicarboxylic acid was determined by means of DFT calculations to be a suitable ligand for a Nickel(II) CISSS complex. This complex was synthesized and the CISSS effect was evidenced by crystallography as well as EVANS NMR susceptibility measurements. In the solid state, the square planar nickel complex is diamagnetic and the octahedral bispyridine adduct is paramagnetic. Also, a dimer containing three ethanol ligands was obtained. Dimer formation occurs in solution as well. Upon addition of pyridine, a continuous transition from predominantly diamagnetic to paramagnetic behavior takes place. Equilibrium constants and the corresponding thermodynamic parameters indicate a high affinity for this ligand and show that the title system is a suitable candidate for LD-CISSS. In DFT calculations, a phenyl- and a napthylazopyridine were determined as suitable covalently attached photoisomerizable ligands for intramolecular spin state switching. However, their syntheses were not successful. The intermolecular LD-CISSS with an azoimidazole-based photodissociable ligand was ruled out in DFT calculations. Last, DFT calculations confirmed nickel complexes with dipyridylamine dicarboxylic acid li¬gands to be suitable for CISSS and appropriate photoswitchable units were determined.
