Abstract:
In this work, the mechanical behavior of multifunctional composites is investigated. Employed multifunctional composites consist of carbon fiber reinforced polymers which are equipped with printed electronics made of nanosilver inks. Methods to investigate the fracture behavior of these printed electronics are discussed. In particular, cohesive zone models are considered as a promising methodology and are examined regarding their applicability. Different experimental test setups are discussed and a double cantilever beam test and an end notched flexure test are identified as the most suitable designs. Experiments are performed and data is obtained that was not available to this extent in the literature before. The resulting data is processed and discussed. Complementary numerical simulations are performed in Abaqus, using bilinear traction-separation-laws. A custom Python script provides control over the automation of cohesive model parameter variation. Unknown cohesive model parameters are found through a combination of experimental post-processing and numerical inverse parameter identification. Cohesive zone models are identified as highly applicable to the investigation of the fracture behavior of multifunctional composites.
