The following thesis aims to analyze travel reports and their discussional contexts and to comprehend how Christianity and “Turkish Religion” of the late 18th century were conceptualized in reference to each other. Neither the “substance” nor “the Islam” are at the centre of attention but the actors’ historical perspective in 18th century. On the one hand the historical context is examined concerning the nowadays quite unknown pastor Christoph Wilhelm Lüdeke (1737-1805) and on the other hand referring to his writings. He has been a pastor of a Lutheran congregation in Smyrna (nowadays Izmir) from 1759 till 1768. New resources provide insights into the beginnings of the Protestant church and missionary history in Smyrna. Lüdeke’s best known writings illustrate how the “Turkish Religion” was used as a mask for interconfessional conflicts.
