The present study describes incidents of poisoning in Thuringia between 1945 and 1980. Thus it is part of studies about the history of poisons and poisoning which is intended to refer to three centuries between 1650 and 1990. A total of 11,842 incidents of poisoning between 1945 and 1980 could be identified. 3,975 and 3,540 cases concerned males and females respectively. According to age the incidents of poisoning were subdivided into 7,539 adults and 1,803 people under the age of 18. Investigation of the intoxications included 5,442 accidents, 1,723 suicides, 357 attempted suicides, 51 murders and 34 attempted murders were investigated. The victims of 6,131 of 11,842 cases of intoxications survived. 3,616 people died because of poisoning. All 11,842 incidents were categorized in six groups according to the basic essences. The largest group are intoxications by gases and gaseous substances: 4,451 cases. 2,172 incidents were caused by food ingredients or plant-based substances, 1,830 by drugs, 1,614 by chemical substances, 997 by addictive substances and 778 by other substances. Comparison of own data with those from the periods of 1820 to 1900, 1900 to 1945 and 1979 to 1990 suggest, that inorganic noxae were the most frequent during all time periods. Shifts occurred within this inorganic group. Murder or attempted murder was a frequent cause of intoxication in the early period, while in later periods suicide and suicide attempts increased significantly. Accidental poisoning played a significant role at all times. From 1820 to 1900, oral application was the most common type of application. Later, the pulmonary application became more important.
