In this thesis, I interpret narratives of life trajectories of Brazilian immigrants, gathered in Germany and Portugal. My question is: What are the imagined boundaries of identity in these cases of intercultural encounters, arising during the immigration. I ponder on the (re)construction of identities within the migration experience and I seek to understand these processes within the larger historical process of national identity construction. This is an interdisciplinary work, linked to the history of the present time, in which Assmann’s ideas of cultural and communicative memory are the basis of the interpretations sought. I propose a methodological hybrid in which I work with the Oral History, the Critical Analysis of Narrative (CAN) and the Critical Analysis of Discourse (CDA) for a historical-cultural interpretation which I consider to be linked to the interdisciplinary tradition of Cultural Studies and come to the conclusion that, if both in Portugal and in Germany elements of cultural memory that were activated, are similar and are linked to a Brazilian national identity logically based on miscegenation and affection, the narratives constructed upon the cultural memory also suffer the impact of the present and there are appreciable differences in narratives strategies and in the ways in which cultural memory based on discourse is managed by the communicative memory. In Germany, the difference between "us" and "them" is clearer and approximation strategies are narrated as individual strategies between "I" and "them". In Portugal the ambivalence between otherness and identity are deeper and approaching and separating are mostly collective movements between "us" and "them".
In dieser Dissertation interpretiere ich – mittels Interviews, die mit BrasilianerInnen in Deutschland und in Portugal geführt worden sind – Narrativen zur Lebenslaufbahn von Migranten und versuche dabei folgende Frage zu beantworten: welche sind die imaginierten Grenzen in diesen spezifischen Fällen von interkultureller Begegnung, die sich im Migrationsprozess ergeben, und wie wirken diese Alteritäten in der (Re)konstruktion von Identitäten. Es handelt sich um eine interdisziplinäre Arbeit, die an die Zeitgeschichte anknüpft. Innerhalb des Arbeitsfelds der Geschichte bediene ich mich des Konzepts von kulturellem und kommunikativem Gedächtnis von Assmann als Interpretationsgrundlage. Ich schlage eine methodologische Hybride vor, bei der ich mich der oral history, der kritischen Narrativenanalyse (KNA) und der kritischen Diskursanalyse (KDA) bediene, um eine kultur-historische Interpretation auszuarbeiten, die ich der interdisziplinären Tradition der cultural studies zuschreibe. Schließlich werden Ergebnisse der Interpretationen der Narrativen aus Portugal und aus Deutschland verglichen und daraufhin untersucht, ob und ggf. in welcher Weise diese sich auf dem Hintergrund unterschiedlicher Migrationserfahrungen und deren Verarbeitung unterscheiden. Wenngleich sich in beiden Ländern die aktivierten Elemente des kulturellen Gedächtnisses gleichen und einer brasilianischen nationalen Identität entsprechen, werden die Narrativen auch von der Gegenwart beeinflusst und weisen unterschiedliche Strategien und Formen der narrativen Handhabung des kulturellen Gedächtnisses durch das kommunikative Gedächtnis auf.
