Terahertz (THz) radiation is able to pass materials, which are opaque for the visual spectral region such that hidden properties of the samples can be made visible. The industrial application of this electromagnetic radiation requires short data acquisition times. These can be realized on the one hand by area detection and on the other hand by direct analysis of the pulse maximum in the time domain. For this, the required optics and their antireflective treatment are investigated in this thesis, especially for THz-pulses with a bandwidth of 0.1–3 THz. At first, it is shown that THz optics can be optimized by standard optic design software (ZEMAX®). With the spectral analysis functions of the software the lateral resolution of the THz pulses in time domain can be estimated what is verified by measurements. For imaging of a relatively small field (8 mm x 8 mm) a combination of an off-axis parabolic mirror and an aspheric lens is used. Here, on analysis of the pulse maximum 1 line pair (LP)/mm could be resolved. The imaging of larger fields required systems with only lenses. For this, as most suited appeared the plastic material Zeonex® 480R. With this material an optical system was developed with a resolution of 1 LP/mm over a field of 64 mm. It is shown that an essentially higher resolution (7 LP/mm) can be achieved by the combination of lenses made of Zeonex® 480R and of high resistive silicon. For an antireflective treatment of the THz optics, subwavelength-surface structures have been tested for the first time. On plastic materials the structures have been fabricated by ultraprecision machining with an aspect ratio of structural depth to period of 2:1. With these structures an antireflective effect was demonstrated for the spectral region of 0.2–1 THz. To high-resistive float-zone silicon the structures were applied by deep reactive ion etching (DRIE). Here, an aspect ratio of 10:1 was achieved. With these structures an antireflective effect could be demonstrated for the spectral region of 0.1–2 THz.
