=> Introduction

The International Aircraft Cabin Air Conferences are developing into a series of conferences organized every two years. ACA2017 and ACA2019 were two-day events at Imperial College London. ACA2021 and ACA2023 were a four-day respectively three-day online conference via Zoom. The conferences are mapping the business, regulatory, and technical solutions to aircraft cabin air contamination.

The ACA2017 and ACA2019 conferences provided networking opportunities for those seeking to understand the subject of contaminated air, the flight safety implications, the latest scientific and medical evidence investigating the contaminated air debate and the solutions available to airlines and aircraft operators. ACA2021 and ACA2023 included online discussions among presenting authors of each session guided by the conference director. The audience contributed to the discussion via the chat.

The conferences held so far have been the most in-depth conferences ever on the topic of aircraft cabin air contamination. ACA2021 counted 1600 registrations.

=> Conference Objectives

By way of expert global independent and industry speakers, the Aircraft Cabin Air Conferences seek to achieve the following key objectives:

• Provide a historical overview of the contaminated air issue and its causes.
• Map out the flight safety aspects of contaminated air through case studies, discussion and air accident investigation findings.
• Disseminate the latest medical and scientific theories and findings on the health aspects of exposure to contaminated air.
• Give guidance of the regulatory aspects of cabin air quality.
• Examine the latest development towards bleed air filtration, contaminated air warning sensor systems and other potential solutions.
• Provide an opportunity for networking and sharing good practice to facilitate better inter-agency working.

=> Findings

• Cabin breathing air on all aircraft apart from the Boeing 787 is taken directly from the engines compressors (upstream of the combustion chamber) and provided unfiltered to the aircraft. This is known as 'bleed air'.
• Bleed air is known to become contaminated with engine oils and/or hydraulic fluids. These fluids are toxic.
• Contaminated bleed air events have been recognised as occurring since the 1950s.
• No aircraft currently flying has any form of detection system fitted to warn when these events occur.
• Flight safety is being compromised by contaminated air events.
• Crew and passengers have been reporting short and long-term health effects as a consequence of exposure to contaminated air.
• Contaminated air events are not rare and known to be under reported.
• Passengers are never told about the risks or these exposures or when they have been exposed.
