The present work deals with a structural health monitoring concept for steel structures. The concept evaluates the vibration characteristics of harmonically excited structures with the methods of system identification. The measurement instrumentation is integrated into the structure. By means of piezoceramic actuators it is possible to excite the system as well as to measure the system response. For the computation of piezoelectric systems the Finite-Element-Method is applied. A finite macro-element is developed to increase the numerical efficiency by incorporating the analytical solution of the electro-mechanical equations. A model updating algorithm is applied to adapt a mathematical model of the structure to the experimental data. The identified model serves as reference solution for further investigations. For the localization and quantification of a local damage two indicators are presented, based on the model updating algorithm in combination with a test procedure. The validation of the concept is realized numerically and experimentally on a damaged steel plate.
