The photo reportage in Germany from 1925 to 1935 : an empirical study on the history of the illustrated press during the development of photo journalism

  • Abstract Die Fotoreportage in Deutschland von 1925 bis 1935.
  • Abstract The photo reportage in Germany from 1925 to 1935. An empirical study on the history of the illustrated press during the development of photo journalism This study focuses on the development of the photo reportage in German weekly magazines (1925-1935). Only few claims about the development of the photo reportage are empirically founded. The present study examined the following two hypotheses by means of a quantitative analysis of a text corpus: The first hypothesis under investigation was the claim that Stefan Lorant had developed the modern photo reportage from 1929. The second claim that we put to test is Gidal’s statement that modern photojournalism in Germany collapsed in 1933 and thereafter largely relied on propagandistic images. The analysed corpus contains all editions of the Berliner Illustrirte Zeitung, of the Arbeiter-Illustrierte Zeitung, of the Illustrierte Beobachter and of the Münchner Illustrierte Presse from 1925 to 1935. The content analysis shows that the number of photo reportages increased dramatically from as early as 1927. Photo reportages in all four weeklies already then had narrative structure and elements (e.g., a two-page layout, modern typesetting, varied photo formats, key images, free-floating and overlapping images). As a result, they hold up in comparison with the modern photo reportage as described by Gidal. After 1928, the number of photo reportages continued to rise in all four magazines and the narrative elements gained more and more importance up until 1932. From 1933, the analysis revealed a trend towards multi-page reportages – with propaganda content and large-size photographs while narrative elements decreased at the same time. Thus, the modern photo reportage did not develop from 1929 to 1931 in the MIP but rather already as early as 1927 in three of the examined weeklies (the MIP, AIZ and the IB). Only in the BIZ was the onset of the modern version of the photo reportage slightly delayed (around 1929). From 1933, photo reportages underwent a change in layout and were propagandistic in nature. The narrative structure and aesthetic of the layout fulfilled in many cases still the criteria of the modern photo reportage. This means that the reported analyses did not reveal a collapse of photojournalism.show moreshow less
