Pluralität und Quantifikation im Sprachvergleich zwischen dem Deutschen und Türkischen

Plurality and Quantification in Language Contrast between German and Turkish

  • This dissertation treats the topic of Plurality and Quantification in Language Contrast between German and Turkish. In particular the subject matter is the syntax and semantics of number marking in the nominal domain. The first chapter comprises a survey of the linguistic literature on plurality and quantification. This is followed by some theoretical considerations on language contrast. The next two sections treat the central notions of contrastive linguistic and language typology. The second chapter is concerned with the methodology and the treatment of language contrast in this paper. The third chapter comprises prominent features of the Turkish Language. The subject areas of phonology, morphology and syntax are treated with respect to language typology. Following up substantial differences between German and Turkish are worked out. The fourth and fifth chapters represent the core of the subject matter of the dissertation. The fourth and fifth chapters represent the core of the subject matter of the dissertation. In the first part the word class of nouns is examined whereby general characteristics and word class features are analyzed. The next section treats the syntax of number marking in the nominal domain. Subsequently a functional typologically based characterization of the category of number is given wherein formal, semantic and pragmatic aspects of number marking are considered. In the next part the variance parameters between Turkish and German are determined and documented in both languages. Differences between German and Turkish unfold in particular in the formal domain. Both languages possess two number categories (singular / plural) whereby the grammatical expression of number adheres to agglutinative morphology in Turkish whilst German follows fusional morphology. The plural is a marked category in both languages. The next section treats the semantics of number marking. The Turkish Language shows in this context a peculiarity in the different morpho-syntactic treatment of the category multiplicity in the use of plural forms. Mass nouns can be used in the plural and singular nouns occur to have transnumeral functions. In contrast to German that shows multiple realizations of the category of number in the NP, there is no agreement between the head noun and the modifiers in the NP in Turkish. Furthermore the Turkish Language does not have a grammatical genus. The marking of definiteness in the German NP is fulfilled by determinatives, especially the definite and indefinite article and demonstratives. In Turkish the category of definiteness is encoded with equivalent constructions and other means of expression, i.e. demonstratives, possessive constructions, word order, case (accusative/genitive) and number. The governing principle in the grammatical means of expression in the Turkish Language is the concept of economy. In contrast to German Turkish also exhibits non-numerical (vagueness / intensification) uses of number. In chapter five other aspects of plural semantics and quantification in German and Turkish are highlighted. The focus is on numeral constructions, definite and indefinite NPs, quantifiers and determiners, genericity and bare NPs as well as collective and distributive quantification.show moreshow less
