Abstract

Abstract in weiterer Sprache

Heterogeneous catalyst systems with triisobutyl aluminium modified montmorillonite K10 and zirconocene or titanocene complexes were successfully applied for ethylene and propylene polymerization by K. Weiss and coworkers. In order to reveal the relations between the structure of the acid activated montmorillonite and the activity of the carrier material, the layered silicate was analytically characterized by TG/DTA-MS, REM, TEM, XRD, N2-physisorption, FTIR and 29Si-, 27Al-, 1H MAS NMR spectroscopy. The comparison with the untreated raw Montmorillonite shows, that acid treatment leads to crystallites which still have a central three layer structure in the core but have amorphous silica acid like regions at the edges which were generated by leaching of octahedral aluminium. Thus, the physical properties are changing as reflected by increasing specific surface area (1.3 times the value for the raw material: 200m2/g) and equally increasing pore volume (0,33ml/g). With acid treatment a significantly broader pore size distribution is obtained. Both greater wedge-shape pores caused by osmotic swelling of the protonated interlayer and smaller meso- and micropores located at/between the tangling tetrahedral layers are generated. Both, the hydrated silicate regions and the H+-exchange in the interlayer create new chemical surroundings which can be spoted as a three dimensional silica network (Q4, 29Si MAS NMR), as defect site silanol groups (FTIR, 29Si, 1H), and by increased acidity (acid H+, 1H). The investigations of the TIBA modified K10 (ICP-AES, TG/DTA-MS, XRD, N2-physisorption, FTIR, 29Si-, 27Al-, 1H MAS NMR spectroscopy) show evidence of aluminium and alkyl groups and localize the catalytically active centres at the amorphous tangling tetrahedral regions. The disappearance of the typical SiOH vibration in the FTIR spectrum after TIBA treatment of K10 as well as an additional aluminium signal prove the covalent bonding of the triisobutyl aluminium to the layered silicate surface. The formation of oligomers and/or chains on the surface is also possible. The heterogeneous catalyst system consisting of K10/TIBA and the metallocenes Cp2ZrCl2 or rac-EtInd2ZrCl2 generates the active metallocenium cation, which polymerizes both ethylene and propylene with high activities. The catalyst support, montmorillonite K10, was subjected to a variety of thermal pre-treatments and cation exchange reactions before being used in ethylene polymerization. It could be shown that the polymerization activity depends on the hydration state of the material as well as on the chemical properties of the interlayer region. Hydrated montmorillonite K10 exhibits the highest activity, whereas drying the support leads to partial collapse of the interlayers with a consecutive decrease of activity. Furthermore, calcination at high temperatures leads to dramatic reduction of polymerization activity. After cation exchange with Ba2+ ions the carrier activity of K10 is maintained. The exchange of the interlayer cation with Cs+ leads to a discharge of interlayer water and consequently interlayers collapsed. When K10 is organophilized with (CH3)4N+- or (CH3)3N+C16H33 (Org+-K10) the organic cations not only are intercalated but additionally they cover all available surface area. Both, Cs+-K10 and Org+-K10 are inactive supporting materials for ethylene polymerization. In situ polymerization using the above mentioned heterogeneous catalysts yields nanocomposites (NCs) with 3-11 wt% of layer silicate. The structure characteristics and properties of these nanocomposites (filler distribution in the polymer, mechanical properties) were analyzed by XRD, TEM and tensile strength measurements. A very good adhesion of the polyethylene and polypropylene matrix to the distorted intercalated or partial exfoliated montmorillonite can be demonstrated. These strong filler-polymer-interactions lead to excellent mechanical properties as reflected by tensile testing. In comparison with homogeneously catalyzed PE without filler, the K10-PE-NCs show a very high tensile strength and a significant increase of tensile stress. The highest value (45MPa) is obtained with size fractioned montmorillonite K10 exhibiting a narrow particle size distribution. It exceeds literature values of both comparable melt intercalated NCs and in situ polymerized PE-NCs. The good adhesion to the polymer provides evidence for a strong chemical bonding of the metallocene to the surface of the TIBA modified montmorillonite in the presented heterogeneous catalyst system. Simply using hydrophobized layered silicates in situ polymerized leads to NCs with a considerably less efficient polymer-filler-interaction. Therefore, optimizing the presented catalyst system to obtain best possible mechanical properties of NCs seems by fare more promising.
