• Die historische Diskursforschung bezieht Werkzeuge der Textanalyse häufig aus der Kritischen Diskursanalyse und der sozialen Semiotik. Diese linguistischen Zugriffe unterspielen jedoch in ihrem Bemühen um die normative Fundierung von Kritik die Geschichtlichkeit des Sozialen. Zudem geht die Fokussierung auf verbalen und visuellen Text damit einher, Kommunikation von sozialem Kontext abzutrennen. Auch das erschwert es, historische Dynamik zu erfassen. Die aufwändige textanalytische Methodik erbringt daher oft Ergebnisse, die gesellschaftsanalytisch unbefriedigend bleiben. Der Beitrag fragt zuletzt, ob nicht auch die historische Diskursanalyse Geschichtlichkeit textualistisch verkürzt. Foucault’s Begriff des Dispositivs und Latour’s Aktantennetzwerke bieten Ansatzpunkte, um ein komplexeres Zusammenspiel von diskursiven und nicht-diskursiven Elementen zu konzeptionalisieren.
• Historical discourse analysis often uses tools for analysing texts that it has adopted from Critical Discourse Analysis and social semiotics. However, in their attempt to establish a non-contingent normative base for their critique, these linguistic approaches do not do full justice to the historicity of the social. In addition, the focus on verbal and visual texts in effect leads to a separation of communication from its social context. This too hampers the observation of historical dynamics. Therefore, an impressive methodological apparatus often yields disappointing results for the assessment of social phenomena. Finally, the article asks if historical discourse analysis also downplays historical contingency as a consequence of its ‘textualism’. It seems necessary to conceptualise a more complex interplay between discursive and non-discursive elements. To this end, Foucault’s notion of dispositif or Latour’s concept of actor networks offer a good starting point.
