German Bohemians in New Zealand: a Bavarian speaking community in the Pacific

  • The article first describes the settlement history of Puhoi (New Zealand), a former German-speaking community. Then the historical and current sociolinguistic situation is presented. This is followed by a more detailed description of the phonological, morphological and syntactic structures as well as the lexicon of the North Bavarian variety on the North Island of New Zealand. In addition, contact phenomena such as structural transfer and, more generally, superstrate influence from English are discussed.
