Synthese und Charakterisierung von metallorganischen Bronzen

Synthesis and Characterisation of Organometallic Bronzes

  • This PhD thesis presents structural and physical investigations on the family of organometallic bronzes. The only representative of this family so far known has been poly-MTO, a polymeric form of Methyltrioxorhenium discovered in 1979. Now it has been possible for the first time to compile an independent experimental structure model of poly-MTO. The structure had been solved on the basis of powder diffraction patterns and had been refined by means of the Rietveld method. Most of the hitherto assumed structural characteristics of poly-MTO are confirmed; yet particular details of the hitherto structure model had to be corrected. In the framework of these studies there had been synthesised yet-another organometallic modification of the polymeric MTO, which shows completely novel characteristics. Like poly-MTO this so-called "ceramic MTO" exhibits a cupreous metallic habit; its consistency, however, is not similar to graphite like for poly-MTO but hard like a ceramic. Yet a unique featureThis PhD thesis presents structural and physical investigations on the family of organometallic bronzes. Now it has been possible for the first time to compile an independent experimental structure model of poly-MTO. Yet a unique feature is its mere two-dimensional structure. This structural feature is reflected for example by diffraction patterns, by the electrical resistivity and by the specific heat. Similar characteristics are not known for any other substance. Apart from the organometallic bronzes there had also been synthesised and characterised inorganic bronzes, based on MoO(3) and WO(3), which realise a layered structure or alternatively a three-dimensional structure (MoO(3)•(4,4'-Bipyridin)(0.5), Re(x)W(1-x)O(3)•H(2)O, Re(x)W(1-x)O(3)). For the syntheses of these reference substances some adapted methods had been developed. An important result of the investigation of these inorganic bronzes is a systematic assembly of structural features of d0 metal oxide layered systems. Another important result of the characterisation is a detailed structural study of the phase transitions of a twinned Re(0.02)W(0.98)O(3) single crystal. Upon this study the paradigm of symmetry reduction during phase transitions is disproved, which has been admitted without limitation so far. The symmetry of the Re(0.02)W(0.98)O(3) structure is increased during cooling at the transition from the gamma to the epsilon phase, which contradicts the paradigm. On the basis of this perception also a correction for the symmetry tree of WO(3) is presented.show moreshow less
