The objective of this work was the formulation and characterization of three different types of colloidal systems based on ionic liquids (ILs). In the first part of this work, the aggregation behaviour of a homologous series of so called surfactant-like ionic liquids (SLILs) based on the 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (CnmimCl), namely 1-dodecyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (C12mimCl), 1-tetradecyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (C14mimCl) and 1-hexadecyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (C16mimCl), in dilute aqueous solution was systematically investigated and the obtained results were compared to literature data of the well-known 1-alkyl-trimethylammonium chloride surfactant analogues (CnTACl). Since the only disparity between these two surfactant analogues is the head group, the one of CnTACl being a substituted ammonium head group with a localized positive charge and the one of CnmimCl being an imidazolium head group with a delocalized positive charge, a fundamental understanding of the peculiarity of the imidazolium head in comparison to the ammonium head could be achieved. The second part of this work was concerned with the question of whether it is possible to formulate binary colloidal systems consisting of micellar aggregates by mixing a SLIL acting as surfactant and a room-temperature molten salt (RTMS) acting as solvent. As SLIL, again, C12mimCl, C14mimCl, and C16mimCl were used and as RTMS either ethylammonium nitrate (EAN) or 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium tetrafluoroborate (bmimBF4) was applied. Beside the investigation at ambient/near ambient temperature, further studies of these SLIL/RTMS-mixtures were carried out at higher temperatures (up to 150°C) in order to verify the high-temperature stability of the formulated systems. The third and final part of this work addresses the formulation of non-aqueous pseudo-ternary microemulsions consisting of C16mimCl as surfactant, decanol as co-surfactant, dodecane as the apolar phase, and a RTMS (EAN or bmimBF4) as the polar phase. As previously for the binary SLIL/RTMS-colloids, the reverse SLIL/RTMS-microemulsions were investigated at ambient/near-ambient temperature and also at elevated temperatures (>130°C). Beside the fundamentals aspects, the investigations of the SLIL/RTMS-colloids and the reverse SLIL/RTMS-microemulsions were investigated with respect to the application of these systems as new templates for the design of nano- and nano-structured materials. The experimental techniques used in this thesis for investigation of the three types of IL-based colloids were surface tension, conductivity, density, rheology, spectrophotometry (UV & fluorescence), differential scanning calorimetry, thermal gravimetric analysis, dynamic light scattering and small-angle scattering (x-ray & neutron).

Die Zielsetzung dieser Arbeit war die Formulierung und Charakterisierung von drei unterschiedlichen Typen kolloidaler Systeme basierend auf ionischen Flüssigkeiten (ionic liquids, ILs). Im ersten Teil der Arbeit wurde das Aggregationsverhalten einer homologen Reihe so genannter �surfactant-like ionic liquids (SLILs) basierend auf dem 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (CnmimCl), 1-Dodecyl-3-methylimidazoliumchlorid (C12mimCl), 1-Tetradecyl-3-methylimidazoliumchlorid (C14mimCl) und 1-Hexadecyl-3-methylimidazoliumchlorid (C16mimCl), in verdünnter wässriger Lösung systematisch untersucht und die erhaltenen Ergebnisse mit den Literaturdaten der bereits gut bekannten 1-Alkyl-trimethylammoniumchlorid-Tensidanalogen verglichen. Da der einzige Unterschied zwischen diesen Tensidanalogen die Kopfgruppe darstellt, im Fall der CnTACl-Tenside handelt es sich um eine substituierte Ammonium-Kopfgruppe mit einer lokalen positiven Ladung und im Fall der CnmimCl-Tenside um einen Imidazoliumkopf mit einer delokalisierten positiven Ladung, konnte ein grundlegendes Verständnis der Besonderheit der Imidazoliumkopfgruppe im Vergleich zur Ammoniumkopfgruppe erhalten werden. Der zweite Teil dieser Arbeit beschäftigte sich mit der Frage, ob es möglich ist binäre mizellare Kolloidsysteme zu formulieren, indem man eine SLIL und ein bei Raumtemperatur geschmolzenes Salz (room-temperature molten salt, RTMS), das als Lösungsmittel dient, mischt. Als SLIL wurden wiederum C12mimCl, C14mimCl und C16mimCl verwendet, während als RTMS Ethylammoniumnitrat (EAN) oder 1-Butyl-3-methyimidazoliumtetrafluoroborat (bmimBF4) eingesetzt wurden. Neben den Untersuchungen dieser Systeme bei und nahe Raumtemperatur wurden zusätzlich Untersuchungen bei höheren Temperaturen (bis 150°C) durchgeführt, um die Stabilität der formulierten Systeme auch bei solch hohen Temperaturen zu verifizieren. Der dritte und letzte Teil dieser Arbeit befasste sich mit der Formulierung und Charakterisierung reverser nicht-wässriger pseudo-ternärer Microemulsionen bestehend aus C16mimCl als Tensid, Decanol als Co-Tensid, Dodecan als unpolare Phase und eine RTMS (EAN oder bmimBF4) als polare Phase. Wie zuvor im Falle der binären SLIL/RTMS-Kolloide, wurden auch die reversen SLIL/RTMS-Mikroemulsionen bei/nahe Raumtemperatur und bei höheren Temperaturen (>130°C) untersucht. Neben dem Aspekt der Grundlagenforschung geschah die Untersuchung der binären SLIL/RTMS-Kolloide und der reversen SLIL/RTMS-Mikroemulsionen auch im Hinblick auf die mögliche Anwendung als Hochtemperatur-Templates für die Synthese von Nano- und Nano-strukturierten Materialien. Die experimentellen Techniken, die in dieser Doktorarbeit für die Untersuchung der IL-basierten Kolloide verwendet wurden, waren Oberflächenspannung, Leitfähigkeit. Dichte, Rheologie, Spektrophotometrie (UV & Fluoreszenz), Differential Scanning Kalorimetrie, Thermogravimetrische Analyse, Dynamische Lichtstreuung und Kleinwinkelstreuung (Röntgen & Neutronen).
