The research reconstructs the interconnected paths and destinies of the Bulgarian emigration of the second half of the 19th century with a special focus on several individual fates and relations as well as the émigrés’ state and nation-building ideas of reshaping the Balkans. Following idea transfers and the development of social networks in the Balkans, I attempt to find out how the mobile lives of the emigrants as well as the political and social reasons that pushed them towards exile influenced their political imagination allowing them to create grand-scale federative schemes.
As their identity can be considered regionally fixed, the Bulgarian emigrants represent a perfect example of both united groups and separate individuals establishing and expending a complicated system of social connections. The aim of the research is to map the trajectories of the emigrants while producing their collective biography, relying on common cohort experiences, however focusing also on micro-cases. The idea of the “Balkan federation” and its development will be viewed as one of the main issues, not only expressed and elaborated by Rakovski and Karavelov and their circle, but regarded, argued and approved from Serbian and Greek sides and thoroughly scrutinized by European powers.
The reconstruction of the Balkan social networks in the second half of the 19th century will not only prove the extraordinary tight liaisons between the neighboring nations to be influential in shaping their political and social plans, but also explain how these networks can define and predict the future conflicts and discourses.

Die Forschung verfolgt das Ziel, die miteinander verbundenen Wege und nationale Ideen der bulgarischen Auswanderung in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts zu rekonstruieren. Nach dem Ideentransfer und der Entwicklung sozialer Netzwerke auf dem Balkan versuche ich herauszufinden, wie das mobile Leben der Auswanderer sowie die politischen und sozialen Gründe waren, die sie ins Exil trieben, ...

Die Forschung verfolgt das Ziel, die miteinander verbundenen Wege und nationale Ideen der bulgarischen Auswanderung in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts zu rekonstruieren. Nach dem Ideentransfer und der Entwicklung sozialer Netzwerke auf dem Balkan versuche ich herauszufinden, wie das mobile Leben der Auswanderer sowie die politischen und sozialen Gründe waren, die sie ins Exil trieben, ihre politische Vorstellungskraft beeinflussten und es ihnen ermöglichten, eine groß angelegte Föderation zu gründen.
Da ihre Identität als regional bedingt angesehen werden kann, sind die bulgarischen Auswanderer ein perfektes Beispiel sowohl für vereinte Gruppen als auch für einzelne Personen, die ein kompliziertes System sozialer Verbindungen aufbauen und ausbauen. Ziel der Forschung ist es, die Flugbahnen der Auswanderer bei der Erstellung ihrer kollektiven Biografie abzubilden, wobei auf gemeinsame Kohorten Erfahrungen zurückgegriffen wird, wobei jedoch auch Mikrofälle im Mittelpunkt stehen. Die Idee des „Balkanverbandes“ und seine Entwicklung wird als eines der Hauptthemen angesehen, das nicht nur von Rakovski und Karavelov und deren Kreis zum Ausdruck gebracht und ausgearbeitet, sondern auch von serbischer und griechischer Seite betrachtet, argumentiert und gebilligt und sowie von den Europäern gründlich geprüft wird.
Der Wiederaufbau sozialer Netzwerke auf dem Balkan in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts würde nicht nur beweisen, dass die außerordentlich engen Verbindungen zwischen den Nachbarn einen Einfluss auf die Gestaltung ihrer politischen und sozialen Pläne, sondern auch erklären, wie diese Netzwerke die Zukunft bestimmen und Konflikte und Diskussionen vorhersagen können.
