This work examines the materiality, production and topics of pop-up books, as well as their position on the book market. The special feature of a pop-up book is the removal of the two-dimensionality of a spread in favor of a three-dimensional object. These can be simple geometric forms, but also complex plastic figures. So-called paper engineers, who are involved with the production, are responsible for the structure and statics of the pop-ups. It is important that the figures erect themselves in the same way every time and that they do not stick out of the book’s body when it is closed. In addition to that, the figures have to be printed separately on a cut sheet, and then cut, folded and glued together manually, which results in high costs. On a textual level any topic is possible, as long as illustrations play a role. One third of the examined pop-up books have fictional contents. The rest of the titles cover non-fiction topics. Children and young adults are mainly approached. Pop-up books satisfy the play instinct and increase the receptiveness for non-fiction topics due to the particular form of vividness.

Die Arbeit untersucht Materialität, Herstellung und Themenbereiche von Pop-up-Büchern sowie deren Stellung auf dem Buchmarkt. Die Besonderheit von Pop-ups besteht in der Aufhebung der Zweidimensionalität einer Doppelseite zugunsten eines dreidimensionalen Objektes. Dies können einfache geometrische Körper, aber auch komplexe, plastische Figuren sein. An der Herstellung sind sogenannte Paper Engineers beteiligt, die für Aufbau und Statik der Pop-ups verantwortlich sind. Wichtig ist, dass sich die Figuren immer wieder auf die gleiche Art und Weise aufstellen und im zugeklappten Buch nicht über den Buchblock hinausragen. Zudem müssen die Figuren separat als Stanzbogen gedruckt und anschließend in Handarbeit beschnitten, gefalzt und zusammengeklebt werden, was hohe Kosten zur Folge hat. Inhaltlich ist jede Thematik möglich, sofern dabei Illustrationen eine Rolle spielen. Ein Drittel der betrachteten Pop-up-Bücher sind fiktionalen Inhalts. Die restlichen Titel behandeln Sachthemen. Überwiegend werden Kinder und Jugendliche angesprochen. Pop-up-Bücher befriedigen den Spieltrieb und erhöhen bei Sachthemen durch die besondere Form der Anschaulichkeit die Aufnahmefähigkeit.
