Abstract

The research conducted within the scope of this thesis focuses on the isomeric couple norbornadiene and quadricyclane which due to their physical and chemical properties have a very high potential of practical applicability as a molecular solar thermal storage system. In order to overcome the drawbacks of the unsubstituted isomeric couple and enable the implementation in a solar energy harvesting device, it is indispensible to investigate the underlying mechanism of the interconversion. Furthermore the development of a catalytic pathway for the controlled energy release from quadricyclane is a crucial step towards an applicable storage system. Both issues were addressed by the research presented in this thesis. The carbon scaffold of the potential storage system was modified to implement it in surface chemistry experiments and to red-shift its absorption spectrum. The isomeric couple was furthermore linked to redox-active chromophores, resulting in the formation of photoswitchable hybride architectures. Elongated rylene dyes were also used to initiate a light-induced catalytic pathway for the energy release. This concept was then transfered to a supramolecular catalytic system.
