The topic of the study is the controversy surrounding functional syndromes in the USA. Patients and doctors often clash in their understanding of the illness. Patient organisations fight for the legitimation of functional syndromes as organic diseases. They actively pursue the medicalization of their suffering. Physicians are often sceptical, since functional syndromes have no known medical cause and do not show any positive pathology. The patient organisations lobby for the acceptance of their illness as a biomedical disease. These patients are the new type of patient in medical practice: informed and active patients. The study is based on the analysis of the webpages of the patient organisations and medical journals. The study reveals transformation processes in modern medical practice.

Thema der Arbeit ist die Kontroverse um funktionelle Syndrome in den USA. Es wird untersucht, wie Patienten um die Anerkennung ihrer Leiden als legitime organische Krankheiten kämpfen und wie Ärzte auf die Interpretationen und Aktionen von Patienten reagieren. Diesen Fragen wird vor der strukturellen Transformation des Gesundheitswesens nachgegangen. Patienten haben Organisationen gegründet, die ihre Forderungen nach Anerkennung der Krankheit und adäquater medizinischer Betreuung durchsetzen. Aufklärung und Aktivismus wird mit Hilfe des Internets betrieben.
