Abstract

In the last two decades, interest in ionic liquids (ILs) has increased tremendously. The majority of ILs used in literature are based on highly fluorinated anions. While their hydrophobicity is very useful for synthesis, the poor biodegradability and the formation of toxic and corrosive HF during thermal disposal limits their use on a large scale. Additionally, their synthesis by anion exchange (metathesis) is not very atom-efficient and utilises substantial amounts of volatile solvents such as dichloromethane. In this thesis, new methods for more atom-efficient syntheses of halogen-free ILs are presented. The addition of Michael acceptors or epoxides to protonated nucleophiles leads in a one-pot synthesis to ILs with functionalised sidechains. The anion can be varied by using different acids for the protonation step. Many starting materials (nucleophile, acid, Micheal acceptor/epoxide) are commercially available at low costs. As no by-products are formed and only small amounts of solvent are needed, these reactions can be considered nearly 100% atom-efficient. The thermal and chemical stability of these compounds however is significantly lowered by the functionalisation of the sidechains. Transesterification of short-chain alkylsulfates, easily accessible by quaternising nucleophiles with dialkylsulfate (R=Me,Et), with alcohols leads to stable long-chain alkylsulfate ILs. This reaction type, chemical alteration of an anion, has not been described for ionic liquids before. The only by-products formed are methanol or ethanol. Removal of these alcohols in vacuum leads to new ILs in good quality (>98%) and with high atom-efficiency. Because of their low cost, these new, halogen-free ionic liquids are highly interesting for technical applications. Several of these halogen-free ILs were equal or superior in the Rh-catalysed hydroformylation of 1-octene, compared to traditional ILs such as [BMIM][BF4]. With sulfxantphos as a ligand, systems with good activity (TOF=295 h-1) and excellent selectivity towards linear aldehydes (n/i-ratio=49) were obtained.
