Abstract

In this thesis, new concepts for transition metal catalysts based on chiral rhenium-containing donor ligands are developed. All new compounds are made accessible by sequences starting with the racemic or enantiomerically pure methyl complex (?5-C5H5)Re(NO)(PPh3)(CH3) (1) or the racemic carbonyl complex (?5-C5H5)Re(CO)3 (8). Chapter 1 provides a general survey of transition-metal-containing chiral mono- and bidentate ligands for catalysis. Chapter 2 describes the synthesis of racemic rhenium-containing phosphines and their successful application as ligands for Palladium-catalyzed Suzuki couplings. Reactions of the racemic methyl complex 1 and TfOH or HBF4/chlorobenzene, and subsequent additions of PR2H (R = Ph, t-Bu, Me) give the phosphonium salts [(?5-C5H5)Re(NO)(PPh3)(PR2H)]+ X– (2; R/X– = a, Ph/TfO–; b, t-Bu/TfO–; c, Me/BF4–) in 82-56% yields. Deprotonations with t-BuOK afford the phosphido complexes (?5-C5H5)Re(NO)(PPh3)(PR2) (3; R = a, Ph; b, t-Bu; c, Me) in 92-86% yields. Treatments of 1 with Ph3C+ X– (X– = PF6– or BF4–) and then PR2H (R = Ph, t-Bu) give the phosphonium complexes [(?5-C5H5)Re(NO)(PPh3)(CH2PR2H)]+ X– (4; R/X– = a, Ph/PF6–; b, t-Bu/BF4–) in 94-85% yields. Deprotonations with t-BuOK afford the rhenium-containing phosphines (?5-C5H5)Re(NO)(PPh3)(CH2PR2) (5; R = a, Ph; b, t-Bu) in 94-76% yields. Treatments of 1 with n-BuLi generate the lithiocyclopentadienyl complex (?5-C5H4Li)Re(NO)(PPh3)(CH3) (6). Subsequent additions of PR2Cl (R = Ph, t-Bu) give the phosphocyclopentadienyl complexes (?5-C5H4PR2)Re(NO)(PPh3) (CH3) (7; R = a, Ph; b, t-Bu) in 60-42% yields. The carbonyl complex (?5-C5H5)Re(CO)3 (8) is similarly converted to the lithiocyclopentadienyl complex (?5-C5H4Li)Re(CO)3 (9) and the phosphocyclopentadienyl complexes (?5-C5H4PR2)Re(CO)3 (10; R = a, Ph; b, t-Bu) in 98-30% yields. The crystal structures of 5b?(CH2Cl2)1.5?t-BuOH and 7b are determined and compared to those of 3a,b and (S)-5a. The trigonal phosphorus atoms become increasingly pyramidalized in the series 5b (338°) < 3b (332°) < 3a (323°) < 7b (315°) < 5a (305°). Most of these species are effective ligands for palladium-catalyzed Suzuki cross-couplings. Typical conditions involve toluene solvent, an aryl halide (1.0 equiv), phenylboronic acid (1.5 equiv), K3PO4 (2.0 equiv), Pd(OAc)2 (1 mol%), the rhenium/PR2 species (4 mol%), and 60-100 °C. In the cases of 3 and 5, the rhenium/PR2 species are generated in situ from indefinitely stable conjugate acids [rhenium/PR2H]+ and t-BuOK (2 equiv or 8 mol%). The bulkier and more electron-rich rhenium/P(t-Bu)2 systems generally give more active catalysts than the rhenium/PPh2 analogs. Under many conditions, the activities of 3a and 3b approach (but do not exceed) those of the corresponding organophosphines PPh3 and P(t-Bu)3, the latter being a benchmark ligand for Suzuki couplings. Turnover numbers of >1000 are easily realized. Bromobenzene and a variety of electron-poor and electron-rich aryl bromides can be coupled smoothly. 100% conversion after only 15 min can be achieved. Aryl chlorides can be coupled, but at much slower rates and in lower yields. Chapter 3 describes the synthesis of 1,2- and 1,3-diphosphines that contain four chiral rhenium fragments and their reactivity as ligands in enantioselective transition metal catalyzed reactions. Treatments of the enantiopure methyl complex (S)-1 with Ph3C+ PF6? and then PH2CH2(CH2)nCH2PH2 (0.5 equiv, n = 0,1) give the dirhenium diphosphonium salts (SReSRe)-[(?5-C5H5)Re(NO)(PPh3)(CH2PH2CH2(CH2)nCH2PH2CH2)(Ph3P)(ON)Re(?5-C5H5)]2+ 2PF6? (n = 0/1, (SReSRe)-24/25) in 71-62% and 80-77% yields. Reactions of (SReSRe)-24/25 with t-BuOK and then (S)-[(?5-C5H5)Re(NO)(PPh3)(=CH2)]+ PF6? ((S)-23) give the tetrarhenium diphosphonium salts (SReSReSReSRe)-[{(?5-C5H5)Re(NO)(PPh3)(CH2)}2(PHCH2(CH2)nCH2PH){(CH2)(Ph3P)(ON)Re(?5-C5H5)}2]2+ 2PF6? (n = 0/1, (SReSReSReSRe)-28/29) in 99-89% and 98-89% yields. The stereochemistry is analyzed in detail. Deprotonations of (SReSReSReSRe)-28/29 with t-BuOK give highly air sensitive tetrarhenium diphosphines (SReSReSReSRe)-{(?5-C5H5)Re(NO)(PPh3)(CH2)}2(PCH2(CH2)nCH2P){(CH2)(Ph3P)(ON)Re(?5-C5H5)}2 (n = 0/1, (SReSReSReSRe)-30/31). These give only modest enantioselectivities in asymmetric rhodium-catalyzed conjugate additions of aryl boronic acids to ?,?-unsaturated carbonyl compounds ((SReSReSReSRe)-30; 41% conversion, 7% yield, 2% ee; (RReRReRReRRe)-31; 48% conversion, 8% yield, 38% ee). Similar results are obtained in palladium-catalyzed asymmetric allylic alkylations ((SReSReSReSRe)-30/(RReRReRReRRe)-31; 47-37% yields, 2% ee). PhIO oxidation gives the dioxides of (SReSReSReSRe)-30/31, tetrarhenium diphosphine dioxides (SReSReSReSRe)-{(?5-C5H5)Re(NO)(PPh3)(CH2)}2(POCH2(CH2)nCH2PO){(CH2)(Ph3P)(ON)Re(?5-C5H5)}2 (n = 0/1, (SReSReSReSRe)-32/33) in 72-62% yields. Selected NMR properties are reported. Chapter 4 describes the synthesis and structures of racemic and enantiopure rhenium-containing phosphine oxides and their reactivity as organocatalysts in the allylation of aldehydes. Reactions of the non-racemic methyl complex (S)-1 and HBF4/chlorobenzene/PPh2H or TfOH/P(t-Bu)2H give the enantiopure phosphonium salts (R)-[(?5-C5H5)Re(NO)(PPh3)(PR2H)]+ X– ((R)-2; R/X– = a, Ph/BF4–; b, t-Bu/TfO–) in 78-46% yields. Reactions of racemic 2a,b or non-racemic (R)-2a,b with t-BuOK, followed by PhIO or Me3SiOOSiMe3, give the racemic or non-racemic phosphine oxides (?5-C5H5)Re(NO)(PPh3)(P(=O)R2) (34a,b or (S)-34a,b; R = a, Ph; b, t-Bu) in 77-13% yields. Treatments of (S)-1 with Ph3C+ PF6– and PR2H give the enantiopure phosphonium complexes [(?5-C5H5)Re(NO)(PPh3)(CH2PR2H)]+ PF6– ((S)-4; R = a, Ph; b, t-Bu) in 97-78% yields. Reactions of racemic 4a,b or (S)-4a with t-BuOK, followed by PhIO or Me3SiOOSiMe3, give the racemic or non-racemic phosphine oxides (?5-C5H5)Re(NO)(PPh3)(CH2P(=O)R2) (35a,b or (S)-35a; R = a, Ph; b, t-Bu) in 86-70% yields. Selected NMR properties are reported. The crystal structures of 34a, (S)-34a?(H2O)0.5, and 35a?CHCl3 are obtained and compared to those of the parent phosphido complexes 3a and (S)-5a. The crystal structure of (S)-4a?(H2O)0.5 exhibits hydrogen bonding. The racemic phosphine oxide (?5-C5H5)Re(NO)(PPh3)(P(=O)Ph2) (34a), the non-racemic tetrarhenium diphosphine dioxide (SReSReSReSRe)-32, and the diastereomerically pure rhenium-containing amide (+)-(SR)-(?5-C5H5)Re(NO)(PPh3)[CONHCH(CH3)C10H7] ((SReRC)-40) are screened as Lewis base organocatalysts for the allylation of aldehydes with allyltrichlorosilane. However, no activity was observed.

Abstract

NO)(PPh3)(PR2H)]+ X– (2; R/X– = a, Ph/TfO–; b, t-Bu/TfO–; c, Me/BF4–) in 82-56% Aubeute. Deprotonierung mit t-BuOK führt zu den Phosphidokomplexen (?5-C5H5)Re(NO)(PPh3)(PR2) (3; R = a, Ph; b, t-Bu; c, Me) in 92-86% Ausbeute. Behandlung von 1 mit Ph3C+ X– (X– = PF6– oder BF4–) und dann PR2H (R = Ph, t-Bu) liefert die Phosphoniumkomplexe [(?5-C5H5)Re(NO)(PPh3)(CH2PR2H)]+ X– (4; R/X– = a, Ph/PF6–; b, t-Bu/BF4–) in 94-85% Ausbeute. Deprotonierung mit t-BuOK führt zu den rheniumhaltigen Phosphinen (?5-C5H5)Re(NO)(PPh3)(CH2PR2) (5; R = a, Ph; b, t-Bu) in 94-76% Ausbeute. Reaktion von 1 mit n-BuLi generiert den Lithiocyclopentadienylkomplex (?5-C5H4Li)Re(NO)(PPh3)(CH3) (6). Anschließende Addition von PR2Cl (R = Ph, t-Bu) liefert die Phosphocyclopentadienylkomplexe (?5-C5H4PR2)Re(NO)(PPh3)(CH3) (7; R = a, Ph; b, t-Bu) in 60-42% Ausbeute. ((S)-23) liefert die Tetrarheniumdiphosphoniumsalze (SReSReSReSRe)-[{(?5-C5H5)Re(NO)(PPh3)(CH2)}2(PHCH2(CH2)nCH2PH){(CH2)(Ph3P)(ON)Re(?5-C5H5)}2]2+ 2PF6?
