Abstract

Using electrical drive systems with active front end (AFE), common DC-link and several axis, a common mode resonant circuit can be observed, consisting of the choke in the active front end and the parasitic capacitances to ground in the shielded motor cables. The resonant frequency thereby is defined through the inductance in the choke and the sum of the parasitic capacitances to ground. The damping is almost only represented through the damping appearing in the choke. Owing to low resonant frequencies especially in systems with long cables and thereby high values of the parasitic capacitances low damping occurs. Excitation is generated through switching in the rectifier of the active front end and the inverter. As consequence overvoltages may appear on the motor terminals. If a certain maximum voltage is exceeded partial discharges may appear degrading the winding isolation and abbreviating the lifetime of the motors. At this point it is important to have a closer look at the high-frequency behavior of the motor in the common-mode region. Owing to parasitic capacitances between winding and grounded core and the inductances in the winding a common-mode resonant behavior also exists. %Most types of AC-Motors with distributed Especially in torque- and linearmotors with concentrated winding high parasitic capacitances exist in the coils and thereby the resonant frequencies may lie in the range of the system resonant frequency. As consequence the voltage is strongly elevated from the motor terminals to the star point. To obtain detailed information about the system behavior, all components of an electrical drive system were deeply investigated and modeled. The most important attention have to be turned on the behavior of the choke, that represents the inductance and the damping of the system, and the already mentioned torque- and linearmotors.% A system model was built, consisting of all component models to calculate the frequency domain behavior. The main parameters that vary in different electrical drive systems are the sum of the parasitic capacitances, the damping and the inductance of the choke and whether torque- or linearmotors are used or not. The highest voltage increase can be observed in systems with torquemotors and high values of parasitic capacitances. The common mode resonant circuits are excited from the switching in the active front end and from the switching in the inverters. Thereby the excitation from a single switching operation as well as from the harmonics in the resulting voltage have to be considered. Two different types of active front ends were analyzed. An active front end with hysteresis current control produces more accidentally appearing switching commands. As consequence no harmonics can be observed. But owing to a positive feedback effect an enforced excitation may be notified. The switching commands of an active front end with flat top modulation are very regular and the resulting voltage implies several harmonics. The excitation of the active front end and the inverters can be superposed. Whereas the highest excitation from the inverters appears with modulation index zero if a sine triangle or space vector modulation scheme is used. Owing to the excitation the oscillations produce overvoltages on the motor terminals. If torque- or linearmotors are used these voltages are additionally increased to the star point of these motors. Other consequences of the oscillations are losses in the choke and high common mode currents. Fundamental investigations show the dependencies on the system parameters. To determine the appearing values, extensive simulations in the time domain were processed. Thereby the maximum appearing voltage on the motor isolation, the average value of the common mode losses and the root-mean-square value of the common mode current was detected. It could be found out, that especially in cases where the resonant frequency of the system is lying near a harmonic of the inverter very increased voltages can be observed. In many system configurations with torquemotors these voltages are high enough to generate partial discharges in the main isolation. Also in systems without torquemotors overvoltages appear in a lower degree generating partial discharges. Especially in the case of the excitation by the harmonics of the inverter the losses and the common mode currents rise up decreasing the efficiency of the system and elevating the current loading of the semiconductor switches. To prove the simulation results, measurements on electrical drive systems were made. The phenomena as well as the detected values could be approved. As results of a methodical analysis of the problem different remedies were determined and six of them were investigated with the aid of simulations and partially with the aid of measurements. The best results can be found with the remedy DC-link-filter'. Very good results for guarding torque- and linear motors can be achieved using the remedy high impedance decoupling', that however implies a high effort. A little bit worse but almost acceptable outcomes with lower effort create the remedies voltage limitation', choke with transformatorial damping' and flat-top-modulation scheme in the inverters'. Other remedies like the modification of the hysteresis current control in the active front end do not generate a sufficient reduction of the overvoltages, whereas they reduce the losses at an only very low effort. A good precondition to be combined with other remedies. For further work interesting aspects could be found using active reliefs e.g. the modification of the modulation scheme or of single switching commands in the active front end or the inverters to reduce the excitation and realize an active damping of the system. The benefit thereby could be to reduce the voltages and the losses with a very low or even no hardware effort.
