  • The opportunistic fungal pathogen Candida glabrata is now the second most common cause of systemic candidosis. Infections caused by C. glabrata are difficult to treat and have a high mortality rate in compromised, at risk hospitalized patients. This may be related to the low level of natural susceptibility against established antifungal agents. In common with other fungal pathogens, there is a lack of defined C. glabrata targets which can be exploited for the rational design of novel antifungal drugs. Therefore the inhibition of the 1,3-ß-D-Glucan Synthase has become on focus of scientific interest. The 1,3-ß-D-Glucan Synthase is a specific fungal enzyme, which does not exist in human beings. It is responsible for cell wall biosynthesis and encoded by the FKS genes. We identified, cloned and sequenced an FKS homolog of C. glabrata.show moreshow less
