Thus, it has been possible to establish new coordination modes at the boron centre. In order to gain further insight into the nature of the metal-boron bond, the chemical properties of these species have been investigated by means of spectroscopic methods and X-ray diffraction. According to a well-established synthetic protocol, the boryl compounds [{(Cy3P)Mn(CO)4}(BCl2)] and [{Re(CO)5}(BX2)] (X = Cl, Br) could be prepared by salt-elimination reaction of BX3 and the corresponding metal carbonylate. In general, boryl compounds turned out to be suitable starting materials for both, the preperation of heterodinuclear bridged borylene compounds [{M(CO)5}(BCl){Co(CO)4}] (M = [Cp*Fe(CO)2]; X = Cl, Br; M = [Mn(CO)5]; X = Cl, Br; M = [Re(CO)5]; X = Cl, Br; and terminal borido complexes of the type [[M](B)(CpMn(CO)2}] (M = [Cp*Fe(CO)2]; M = [Mn(CO)5]; M = [(Cy3P)Mn(CO)4]. The latest have been prepared by saltelimination and spontanous HX release of K[Cp(H)(CO)2Mn] and the corresponding boryl complex K[Cp(H)Mn(CO)2] is not a suitable reagent for the transformation of Cl2BMes into the corresponding terminal aryl borylene complex but led to the formation of a σ-borane compound [{CpMn(CO)2} (HBMes)]. [{Re(CO)5}2(BCl)] was prepared by reaction of BCl3 with a twofold excess of Na[Re(CO)5] and can be isolated in good yields of 67%. It could be demonstrated that halide abstraction occurred upon treatment of [{Cp’Fe(CO)2}(BCl)] and [{Re(CO)5}2(BCl)] with Na[BArf4], affording the linear, cationic borido complexes [{Cp’Fe(CO)2}2(B)][BArf4] and [{Re(CO)5}2(B)][BArf4], respectively. Treatment of [{Mn(CO)5}2(BBr)] and [{Re(CO)5}2(BCl)] with the low valent platinum species [Pt(PCy3)] resulted the formation of the boron containing species [{Mn(CO)5}2(B){Pt(PCy3)2(Br)}] and [{Re(CO)5}2(B){Pt(PCy3)2(Cl)}] respectively, which were formed by oxidative addition of the BX bond to the Pt(0) center. Salt elimination reactions of the borylenes [{Cp’Fe(CO)2}(BCl)], [{Mn(CO)5}2(BCl)] and [{Cp’Fe(CO)2}(BFc)] with Na[Co(CO)4] led to the formation of the trimetallo boranes [{Cp’Fe(CO)2}(B)(Co(CO)3)], [{Mn(CO)5}2(BCl)] and [{Cp’Fe(CO)2}(BFc)] with a trigonal planar boron center. The borido complex [{Cp*Fe(CO)2}(B){Cr(CO5)}] can be employed as a source for the borylene fragment {Cp*Fe(CO)2}(B)} both under thermal and photochemical conditions. New ferroborirenes [{Cp*Fe(CO)2B}{C2(Ph)2}] [{Cp*Fe(CO)2B} {C2(SiMe3)H}] can be obtained. Furthermore, the metalloborylene moiety can also be transferred sucessfully to transition metal fragments as [CpCo(CO)2], [Cp*Ir(CO)2], [Cp*Rh(CO)2] and [Cp*(H)Mo(CO)3] thus creating a versatile route to various new boron compounds by intermetallic borylene transfer, like [{Cp*Fe(CO)2}(B){CpCo(CO)}2], [{Cp*Fe(CO)2}(B){Cp*Ir(CO)}], [{Cp*Fe(CO)2}(B){Cp*Fe(CO)2Rh}{Cp*Rh(CO)}] and [{Cp*Fe(CO)2}(B)(H){CpMo(CO)2}]. Treatment of the borido species [{Cp*Fe(CO)2}(B){Cr(CO)5}] and [{Cp*Fe(CO)2}(B){Cp*Ir(CO)}] with the basic platinum complexes [Pt(PCy3)2] and [Pt(PiPr3)3], respectively, led to the formation of the unusual T-shaped structures. Thus, the tetranuclear species [{Cp*Fe(CO)}(CO)3{Pt(PCy3)}2{Cr(CO)2}(B)] and [{Cp*Fe(CO)}(CO)3}{Pt(PEt3)2}2{Cr(CO)2(PEt3)}(B)] were obtained. The solid state structure revealed the presence of an almost square-planar boron center, which is surrounded by four transition metal fragments. A couple of decades ago, a similar coordination mode has been postulated for CM4 species (M = electropositive metal atoms), which could be realized later on. Nowadays, these types of complexes are called anti van’t Hoff-le Bell compounds.show moreshow less
